Mosquito or sandfly bites and bee, wasp or jellyfish stings can cause anything from short-lived, mild irritation to severe swelling and pain. For some, they mean a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention. For people who are not allergic, however, below are first aid treatments:
- Remove any stinger by scraping it with blunt knife or fingernail. Avoid pinching it, as this ay squeeze more venom in the wound
- Jellyfish tentacles should be washed off with salt water.
- Apply an ice pack, wrapped in a towel, for 10 to 20 minutes to reduce pain and inflammation.
- Mild reactions to insect bites can be eased with an anti-inflammatory hydrocortisone cream, antihistamine cream, or calamine lotion to cool and soothe. They should not be used if the skin is broken.
- If the reaction is more severe, oral antihistamines may help relieve symptoms, including itching, swelling, and hives.
