Down to the Bone

Prolonged steroid therapy to manage pain or inflammation can result in thinning bones and increase the risk of fractures. Here are some tips to help maintain bone strength while taking steroids:
  • Take calcium supplements and milk products, like cheese or yogurt, to get the minimum calcium intake of at least 1500 milligrams a day.
  • Take multivitamins to ensure a minimum o 400 IU of vitamin D a day to help or sustain calcium absorption.
  • Reduce or eliminate smoking and alcohol.
  • Do weight-bearing exercises, such as walking, running, and dancing to help stabilize bone mass and promote balance and flexibility.
  • Assess risk of falls by installing safety measures at home, such as night lights, padded corners, or supportive railings.
