Royal Wedding

I'm sure everyone is hooked on their televisions right now for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton which takes place today at the Westminster Abbey at 11:00am (6:00pm Manila time).

Too bad I'm still at work that I can't watch it even on live stream. Anyhow, I do hope I can still catch it on tv when I get home later.

Free Alternatives

Who doesn’t like free? I’m sure everybody does, especially when it comes to software. Some people may not know it, but the internet is actually chock-full of free software. All you need is to know where to look.

You have a lot of options when it comes to file sharing software. aMule and Ares are just a couple of them. I have personally used these or variants of them as they are open-source software. Both these peer-to-peer programs are not limited to connect to networks with only the same software, they can connect to multiple sources making searches and downloads faster.

So you have a lot of music files and would like to edit them, say get rid of the pops and hisses from the LP-ripped files, or normalize the levels so all your tracks or at the same volume level, then Audacity is the software for you. This is a program that I use and have installed on my systems. Aside from the capabilities I mentioned, there are other features that you may find useful. I’ve used it to remove the vocals form tracks and even reduce the bitrate of songs to make it into a phone’s ringtone.

A free 3D graphics program? It turns out there is one in Blender. It’s a free app that can be used for modeling, texturing, water and smoke simulations, non-linear editing, among others as well as creating interactive 3D applications including video games and animated films. I’m still getting the hang of it and developers are continuously trying to streamline the interface. And for a 3D suite, Blender has a relatively low hardware requirement.

How about a free multimedia player? Yes there’s the omnipresent Windows Media Player, but is it good enough? Some people don’t think so, hence they made other players available like the BS Player. Now this is another oldie as it has been in existence for several years now. It’s still here and it is better than ever. It can just about play anything you throw at it.

All of these are open-source software, meaning its source code is available for users to study, edit, and improve the software. Other than subject everyone else to the mercy of the big software companies, several geniuses pool their knowledge together to come up with a god-sent free alternative that can hold its own against the big dogs, and some even say even better than the paid software.

Scrubs

A few weeks ago, the kids had their well-baby check up at the nearby clinic. We also had our anti-flu shots administered by their pediatrician. Anyway, while we were waiting for our turn, the nurse in her hot pink scrubs took their weight for the doctor’s records. The clinic, small as it was, was filled with people in scrub suits. The nurses, attendants and medical technician were all wearing scrubs, making you feel like you were in an actual hospital.

I used to wonder why workers in hospitals and clinics nowadays were always wearing scrubs as compared before when only the people in the operating rooms were the ones wearing them. But then, I realized that wearing an all-white uniform all day was a little difficult especially when you interact with a lot of people on a daily basis. I myself would be wary of staining my white shirts. Plus, I believe kids would feel more comfortable dealing with people in scrubs, with the different vibrant colors they now come in, especially now that they come in different designs and prints. And from the way they look, they seem pretty comfortable to wear, especially the ones from http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/. If only everyone could dress like that to work.

My Good Friday

As mentioned in a previous post, I went with a couple of cousins to visit seven different churches for the Way of the Cross – by means of only walking. The night before, cousin O mentioned what he planned on doing, then cousin J told me that we should try it as well, so that’s exactly what we did. So come Good Friday, we met at our designated meeting place near Quiapo Church. Thank goodness we didn’t have a hard time for that considering the size of the crowd in the area. After praying a couple of stations, we walked to Sta. Cruz church, then to Intramuros for Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church. We then headed to Ermita Shrine, then Malate Church. This was where I got married so I was really glad that we included this church in our trip. Last on the list was Baclaran Church. This was quite a way from where we were but we decided nonetheless to go. The truth is I have never been there before so all the more reason for me to go. All these churches were visited in around 3.5 hours, which O said was fast compared to his time when he did it alone. After that we went to his house for a quick lunch before heading home. On the way home, I passed by a store to buy something which was thankfully placed in the POS display so I easily found it. Anyway, I was really glad that I went with my cousins to visit the seven churches as it’s been more than ten years since I last did that with my family. It was my little sacrifice for the Holy Week.

Travel Destination

My sister sent this to me last week and it’s really a good package that I’m thinking if we will avail of this since we haven’t had a vacation as a family for a long time. I remember the time we spent our honeymoon at El Nido and we really had a great time there. And now this resort is owned by El Nido already, I’m sure the trip is going to be worth it especially since they are offering it at a low price. Booking period is from April 15-June 30 and travel period is until September 30. I still have a few months to think and save if we want to avail of this promo.

Getting Ready for School

Our eldest isn’t set to go to big school yet but we are already decided to get the kids their own computer. From what I’ve heard from parents of older children, we learned that students nowadays are taught very early to use the computer for schoolwork. Because of this, we’ll also get them a scanner and printer to help them on their schoolwork. When they get older and start doing research works, they would need a very good scanner software with OCR capabilities so they can scan and easily edit the scanned document with ease.

Trouble with Hot Flushes

The onset of menopause is usually announced by symptoms like hot flushes, defined as “a feeling of warmth that spreads over the body that begins, and is most strongly felt, in the head and neck regions.” While hot flushes are common and may begin during perimenopause, which is about two years before menstruation ceases, not all women experience the symptom. For those who do, there are natural ways to treat or alleviate the discomfort.

Stay cool. Even minimal increase to your body’s core temperature can trigger hot flushes. Wear cool clothing, open windows or air conditioning, or sip cold drinks whenever you can.

Rest and Relax. Stress is one of the most common triggers, so stress-reducing techniques may be helpful. Do yoga, meditate, or just rest.

Deep Breathing. Exercises on deep breathing have been proven to help combat hot flushes. Do this by sitting comfortably, and inhaling deeply for five seconds, and exhaling for five seconds. Repeat the cycle until you feel calm and relaxed. Do this for 15 minutes twice a day.

Ripped

We had a surprise visit from my husband’s old high school friend last weekend. It turns out that for the past three years he’s been going to the gym that was just a stone’s throw away from our house. He’s been a fitness buff ever since, so no wonder he’s all ripped and looks like a walking advertisement for a natural testosterone supplement. We’re all looking forward to his next visit hopefully very soon.

When Muscles Ache

Muscle strains and ligament sprains are two of the most common sports injuries that happen in everyday life. Soft tissue injuries result in varying degrees of pain and swelling, which should prompt appropriate action to protect the injury and promote full recovery. If, at any time, you become worried that an injury might be severe - or the pain, swelling, or function worsens or shows no improvement within 48 hours - let a doctor check it. Here are some of the tips to help avoid injury:
  • Improve general strength and fitness to protect joints
  • Improve specific sports skills and technique
  • Correct any muscle strength imbalances
  • Always do a gradual warm-up or jog before you exercise
  • Stop if you feel any pain

A Little Addition

If there’s one thing that I like about being sidelined and stuck in your house, it’s that you’re finally able to do the things you’d normally put off for another day, and then some. You notice other things that might need some work at home. In my case, I thought of putting a door kick plate on our front door to minimize the nicks and scrapes on the bottom edge. Not only does it minimize the nicks and scratches, it looks cool too.

Work Place

I had another interview last week at the client premises where, if the terms are agreed upon, will be assigned. It’s initially going to be a help desk position with desk side support when the company expands the services that they offer the client. Unlike the other help desk offices I’ve seen, their work place isn’t entirely devoid of any office supply. But it isn’t exactly like some cubicles where you’d see it filled to the brim with pens and post-its. I wonder how my desk will look like if I worked there.
