Who doesn’t like free? I’m sure everybody does, especially when it comes to software. Some people may not know it, but the internet is actually chock-full of free software. All you need is to know where to look.
You have a lot of options when it comes to file sharing software. aMule and Ares are just a couple of them. I have personally used these or variants of them as they are open-source software. Both these peer-to-peer programs are not limited to connect to networks with only the same software, they can connect to multiple sources making searches and downloads faster.
So you have a lot of music files and would like to edit them, say get rid of the pops and hisses from the LP-ripped files, or normalize the levels so all your tracks or at the same volume level, then Audacity is the software for you. This is a program that I use and have installed on my systems. Aside from the capabilities I mentioned, there are other features that you may find useful. I’ve used it to remove the vocals form tracks and even reduce the bitrate of songs to make it into a phone’s ringtone.
A free 3D graphics program? It turns out there is one in Blender. It’s a free app that can be used for modeling, texturing, water and smoke simulations, non-linear editing, among others as well as creating interactive 3D applications including video games and animated films. I’m still getting the hang of it and developers are continuously trying to streamline the interface. And for a 3D suite, Blender has a relatively low hardware requirement.
How about a free multimedia player? Yes there’s the omnipresent Windows Media Player, but is it good enough? Some people don’t think so, hence they made other players available like the BS Player. Now this is another oldie as it has been in existence for several years now. It’s still here and it is better than ever. It can just about play anything you throw at it.
All of these are open-source software, meaning its source code is available for users to study, edit, and improve the software. Other than subject everyone else to the mercy of the big software companies, several geniuses pool their knowledge together to come up with a god-sent free alternative that can hold its own against the big dogs, and some even say even better than the paid software.
